EVEREST for HEROES 2010
EVEREST for HEROES 2010
Matt Snook is a natural climber, with many years spent learning to push himself both mentally and physically in the pursuit of the adrenaline rush of achievement. His ability to keep his composure and natural leadership style under extreme pressure is something to be greatly admired. He lives for new challenges and adventure, and that’s big testament to his drive, determination and ambition.
John Thornton first introduced me to Matt when he was a student on the demanding Air Cadets Junior Leaders Course, some 6 years ago. It was awesome to see how the course pushed Matt and built on his natural ability. There is a genuine sincerity about his character which has forged a great friendship between us.
I could immediately see the deep bond of friendship between John and Matt, growing up together with the same aspirations and dreams in their hometown of Ferndown. The banter that ignited between them never failed to light up a room and I can only begin to imagine the impact the tragic death of his best friend has had on Matt. But it’s the greatest testament to his character how he’s continued to live his dream and I know that’s what John wanted him to do. For Matt, climbing Everest is more than just personal dream, it’s something he and John both shared. They swore to each other that one-day they would stand on top of the world together.
Matt completed his Royal Marines Reserve training, gaining the coveted Green Beret whilst at Swansea University. He has recently returned from a 7 month tour of Afghanistan with 45 Commando Royal Marines. He’s fully aware of the horrific life changing injuries sustained by our service men and women defending our country’s interests.
‘Dare to dream...’
The two charities of Help for Heroes and the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation are both very relevant and prominent to Matt. The challenge and passion he has for raising significant funds for both of these outstanding charities is evident to see.
In all, Matt is an exceptionally impressive man and he manages to combine his natural talent with great humility. It’s an utter privilege to be fulfilling this personal lifetime dream together.

There have been many great moments and banter shared over the years; either whilst surfing, rock climbing, mountaineering or exploring various drinking establishments around the country. Wakeboarding on the other hand is something which constantly tests his sense of humour!
